I'm Shaina Smith and I'm eager to represent the individuals and families that make up Scituate and Cranston.
As you may have read, I'm a mother, former elected official, help manage one of our family's businesses and have over 13 years of experience in public policy, government and media relations. But I'd like to share with you the parts of me that perhaps are relatable.
My husband Tim is a Scituate native and candidate for town sergeant. We both wanted to provide what we felt were the best opportunities for our son, Landon. We knew that we wanted to raise him in a small, rural town. After countless visits to my husband's childhood house, the Scituate community naturally began to feel like home. It took several years of hard work and the support from our family to get to where we felt we could afford to start a new chapter of our lives in the very town where we were married.
Before moving to Scituate, we resided in the quiet corner of Connecticut. It was there where Tim built his distribution company from the ground up. I changed careers from a news director/morning anchor for a radio station to working within the nonprofit sector. The transition afforded me the opportunity to create a national volunteer advocacy program.
Serving as director of state policy and alliance development was an invaluable experience; I was humbled to have had the chance to help improve the lives of an extremely vulnerable population. I curated and helped pass legislation that improved the lives of children and adults living with chronic conditions. My position within the policy and advocacy world wasn't just a career, it was personal.
My son and I live with a genetic connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). As both a patient and caregiver, I know first-hand what it's like to be a part of an underserved, often invalidated population. I also know the challenges constituents face when it comes to insurance barriers and mobility issues. I've gone through the difficult choices we often must make when appointments/procedures feel financially out of reach. I've navigated through the process of developing and having a specialized 504 plan approved for my son within the school district. I also have personal experiences with other physical and mental conditions, and I'm open and transparent about those diagnoses to help break the societal stigmas.
As a family of three, we work collaboratively to support our family businesses, an adventure that's given us invaluable life lessons about each other, the region's economy, and the importance of supporting locally owned establishments. When we aren't working, our family enjoys nature trails, traveling, music, bird watching, helping animals, Pokémon, giving back to the community and spending time together.
I'm ready to once again be a public servant and will work to ensure Scituate and Cranston are well represented at our state house. You deserve strong leadership, open communication and fair representation. I will work to introduce and/or cosponsor legislation that promotes a better quality of life for the children and adults residing in district 41.
I humbly seek your vote on November 5th.
If you're ready for positive change within the 41st District, make a monetary donation today! It's going to take a grassroots effort to run a meaningful campaign - join the cause today.
